The lunik II was the first probe to hit the moon, the soviet rocket colided close to the famous landmark the sea of tranquility.
The rocket was carrying 860lb (391kg) of testing equiptment of which was a:
(Magnetometer (magnetic fields)
Geiger counter (radiation environment)
Micrometeoroid detector
Scintillation counter (magnetospheric studies))
The lutnik was travelling at 7 miles per second when it came it contact with it’s target it was at enough speed to avoid the moons natural gravitation.
The onboard equiptment was carried to measure the belts of radiation and the magnetic field around the moon.
The first rocket the Lutnik I was launched into space but it missed careering past the moon and continuing into space.
